That wasn't a bad listing or a single retailer gouging. The HDD shortage hitting PC gaming in 2026 is a genuine market condition, it's been building for over a year, and it's now hitting the point where it affects what ordinary people can afford to build.
Here's what's actually going on, what it means for your setup, and the practical stuff you can do about it that doesn't involve waiting for a market correction that might not arrive this year.
Why storage got expensive: it isn't about gamers
The frustrating part of this story is that gaming had nothing to do with causing it, which means gaming has no leverage to fix it.
The driver is datacenter demand. The enormous buildout of AI compute infrastructure over the past few years needs somewhere to put training data, model checkpoints, and inference caches — and that means storage at a scale that dwarfs consumer demand. High-capacity mechanical drives, the kind used in bulk in datacenters, have seen order volumes that manufacturers simply can't meet with existing production.
Three consequences follow, and they compound:

Eight things that actually help
Enough diagnosis. Here's what I'd genuinely do, roughly in order of how much benefit you get per unit of effort.
1. Audit what you have before you buy anything
Boring and effective. Most people's drives contain 200GB of games they finished eighteen months ago and haven't opened since. Digital purchases don't disappear — uninstalling is reversible, and re-downloading a game you might play again in six months is cheaper than buying a drive today.
Go through your library. Be honest about what you're actually going to launch. This single step regularly frees more space than the drive people were about to buy.
2. Delete the parts of games you don't use
A lot of large games let you uninstall components separately — campaign, multiplayer, high-resolution texture packs, individual language files. If you only play a shooter's multiplayer, the campaign install is dead weight. Check the storage management options in your launcher; several of them expose this and almost nobody looks.
3. Stop treating an SSD as mandatory for everything

Rough test: if the game shows a loading screen and then never loads again, mechanical is fine. If you can outrun the asset streaming by driving fast, it needs flash. Open worlds and modern engine titles like the UE5 Halo remake belong on your fast drive. Turn-based tactics games genuinely do not.
4. Buy for the capacity you need, not the capacity you want
The historical advice was to buy bigger than you need because price per gigabyte improves with capacity and you'll grow into it. That logic assumed prices fall over time. The rules: check the drive's reported power-on hours and health data the moment it arrives. Buy only from sellers who accept returns. Never put your only copy of anything on a used drive. And treat it as bulk storage for reinstallable games, not for anything irreplaceable.
For a game library — which is by definition re-downloadable — this is a genuinely reasonable risk to take.
6. Consider that you might not need to upgrade at all
The most cost-effective response to an expensive market is frequently to sit it out. If you have a working setup, the cost of waiting six months is that you juggle installs occasionally. The cost of buying now is a permanent overpayment.
I say this as someone who writes hardware content and is aware of the incentive to tell you to buy things. Sometimes the honest advice is "not yet."
7. Plan console storage ahead of the holiday crush
Console storage is worse than PC storage in this market because your options are narrower — proprietary expansion formats have less competition and prices move less freely.
If you're planning to buy GTA 6 in November, and its install is as large as expected, sort your storage in advance. Buying expansion storage in the week of a major launch is how you pay the worst possible price.
8. Get your backup situation straight first
Slightly outside the topic but I'd be doing you a disservice not to say it. If storage is scarce and expensive, the worst outcome is losing data you can't re-download. Game installs are replaceable. Save files, screenshots, recordings, and mod configurations frequently aren't.
Cloud saves cover more than they used to. Check yours are actually enabled — several launchers default them off for specific titles and people find out at the worst possible moment.
What this means if you're building a PC right now
Storage has gone from an afterthought line item to something that meaningfully shapes a build budget, and it changes the standard advice.
The old rule was to allocate roughly 5-8% of a build to storage and not think about it. Under current conditions that can easily double, and if you're not adjusting elsewhere, the money comes out of your graphics card or processor.
My honest guidance: start with 1TB of decent flash storage and nothing else. Get the system built and running. Add bulk capacity later when you actually hit the limit — by then you'll know your real usage and prices may have moved. Buying 4TB up front because it seemed sensible is how builds go over budget this year.

When does this end?
Honest answer: I don't know, and neither does anyone confidently telling you they do.
What I can tell you is what to watch. Storage cycles historically resolve in one of two ways — demand cools, or supply expands. Demand cooling means the datacenter buildout slowing, which is a broader economic question well outside gaming. Supply expanding means manufacturers committing capital to new capacity, which takes years to come online and only happens when they believe demand will persist.
